River City Clocks Radio-controlled Schoolhouse Clock with Swinging Pendulum and Cherry Finish - 21 Inches Tall - Model # 801-403CReviewsJust got the clock today, put in the batteries, selected Pacific Time and the clock immediately began to set itself. It stopped at 4 p.m. as the instructions said it might. It was 5:20 at the time. About five miutes later it started setting itself again and stopped at the correct time. I checked it against another atomic clock and it is about 15 seconds fast. Not sure which clock is the more accurate one. It is hanging on a fireplace mantle at a 90 degree angle to, and about 12-15 feet from a large north facing window. I was concerned about it receiving the atomic signal but it picked it up just fine. The image used by Amazon shows a second hand and even though the instructions mention a second hand, mine does not have one. The dial face is also not white, but rather an antiqued cream color. Reduces the contrast with the numerals a bit. It no longer says La Crosse, but River City. Would have liked the white. However the wood color is right on. Nice cherry finish. The pendulum which is powered by a separate battery swings too fast to be realistic. It has a bit of adjustment to raise/lower the pendulum which may be able to slow it down a bit. Check the space available where you want to hang this thing as it is a large clock. Small discrepancies aside I think this clock will work out just fine. Looks good on the mantel and it will be nice to have something that will be accurate when a power failure leaves all the digitals flashing. I purposely waited a couple of months since my purchase to ensure the clock performed as expected. It does! We added a breakfast room to our kitchen and decided we needed a clook on one of our new walls. I liked the idea of a radio controlled clock to keep accurate time and to adjust for the changes for day light savings. The clock was delivered in a few days, was in excellent condition. Assembly was a snap and it has performed flawless even since. I would recommend this clock to family and friends. This is a beautiful clock with a bright, easy to see face. The automatic, radio control feature is really special. All we had to do was insert batteries and set the time zone. I highly recommend this clock. INSERT AA BATTERY, ELECT TIME ZONE AND IT SETS ITSELF....ONLY NOTHING HAPPENED. PLAYED WITH IT FOR A WEEK, CAUGHT THE TIME SIGNAL FOR A FEW DAYS THEN WENT BALLISTIC THEN JUST STOPPED.... NICE PRESENT FOR MY WIFE'S 50TH BIRTHDAY. AMAZON HAS NEVER DONE THIS TO ME BEFORE...THINK I'LL STICK TO BUYING GOOD OLD FASHION BOOKS. I am 100% satisfied. The clock looks great hanging on my wall. I was informed that my purchase would be delivered on a certain date and I received it several days before it was due. I would recommend this product to anyone--friend or foe. Average Rating:![]() |

Cathedral Antique-Style CD Player in Paprika by Crosley RadioReviewsMy husband is an audiophile, and laughed at me when I said I wanted this CD/radio. Unlike him, I don't really care that much about sound quality. Not that it doesn't matter to me at all--it's just that HE has the big, nice sound system already, so I was happy to get something that would look nice in the living room and could play in the background while I was reading. I don't need or even like to play music very loud, so something small and pleasantly retro like this was just what I wanted.(We don't all care for 15 shelves worth of audio equipment and a gigantic subwoofer.) I was so excited! As other reviewers have stated, it's a little difficult to tune in the radio. That was disappointing, but my CDs sounded nice enough, and the radio/CD player made me happy even to look at. It just seemed RIGHT to listed to Louis Armstrong through it, as if the beauty of the retro cathedral style cabinet made the sound more authentic. It was lovely! I was even considering getting another Crosley product for a different room, having fun paging through the catalog and anticipating what I would ask for for my birthday. I was SO happy. ... for about 7 months. Then the right speaker blew. (Sound doesn't come out of the front speaker-looking area, but is stereo from the sides.) That it would blow surprised me, seeing as how I never, never listen to it at top volume, nowhere near. The guarantee that comes with this item is limited, and wouldn't cover the problem. Reasonable person that I am, I still wasn't too upset--I was just disappointed a bit. After all, my husband is an audiophile, as I mentioned, and he could replace the speakers for me if we could get replacements. With that happy thought, he wrote Crosley to find out if they sold replacement speakers, or if they had recommendations for replacements. He never heard back. He wrote twice, responsibly checked his spam folder just in case, but NOTHING. So... I wrote. This is the third time they had been contacted by us. Keep in mind we were both polite: simply explained what had happened, and asked if there were recommended speakers so we could take care of the problem ourselves. I don't care about sound quality that much as I said, but it is unlistenable with all the static in the blown speaker. Was the third time the charm? No. I got no response, either. Even if Crosley had no recommendations, it seems to me it would be polite to write back. Is this an indication of the quality of their customer service, or the quality of their product... or both? That is, after having looked for speakers ourselves, we don't seem to be able to locate any that will fit. We can find the correct wattage and so forth; however, there is not much clearance inside the case. Every speaker we looked at--and we have spent considerable time looking--seemed to be too deep to fit. So far as we can tell, the speakers are a proprietary make and substitutions that will fit can't be found elsewhere. I loved this item while it worked. However, unless you are the type of person that can pay $80 or $100 every few months to get a new one ($80 if you get it on sale), don't buy this product. The quality is apparently so poor, the manufacturer, Crosley, is embarrassed to respond even to polite inquiry. I was their perfect target customer--someone who didn't care so much about perfect sound, but who preferred instead the vintage look with just acceptable sound quality--and I am terribly unhappy with them. I'm so unhappy, I'm wasting a lovely Saturday morning writing this review. Shame on them. I certainly won't be buying another Crosley product for a different room as I had once fondly planned, and I hope I have saved you the trouble and expense of buying ANY Crosley product. For shame. I love this "Cathedral"-style Crosley AM/FM Radio/CD Player. The paprika color is so rich and warm, beautifully finished, and complements just about any other shade of wood finish. My style is eclectic, but leans to the Victorian and oriental with medium and dark cherry, mahogany, black lacquer, and jewel-tone fabrics, so the finish and style of this Crosley piece fit right in. The sound is great -- maybe not like a $3,000 sound system, but it does justice to my classical radio station and CDs. The antique-style, bronze-colored hardware is gorgeous and really completes the look. Everyone who sees it wants to know where I found it, especially when I tell them how reasonably priced it is (they all should know by now that I find my "deals" on Amazon). It arrived ahead of schedule and in excellent condition (good packing), and I highly recommend this product and vendor. Average Rating:![]() |

Crocodile Dundee II (Crocodile Dundee 2) [VHS]ReviewsLiving with Sue after she stopped him from leaving New York to go off and explore America, after she confessed that she loves him, Australian Crocodile Hunter Michael J. 'Crocodile' Dundee still trying to adapt to life in New York City and getting use to a different culture is about to use his hunting and survival skills yet again, when Sue is kidnapped by crime boss Rico and his associates, when Sue's Ex husband photographer Bob Tanner witnesses a brutal crime and takes snapshots of the crime and sends them to Sue. Mick rescues Sue from Rico and his associates. Mick decides to take Sue back home with him to Australia, as his best bet of protecting Sue. But when Rico and his associates arrive after tracking Sue and Mick down, Mick takes them on by doing what he does best. This movie is just a fun ride all the way and good family entertainment. After the amazing success of the first movie, there just had to be a follow up. This had alot of funny moments, but i wouldn't say it's as good as the first. I saw the first 2 of these at the cinema when they came out.The first on i saw twice.I havn't done that with too many movies.Paul Hogan certainly had an amazing sense of humor. If you like these, you should grab a copy of the best of The Paul Hogan Show. This product arrived in excellent condition and very speedy service. I'm very satisfied with this product. I know I am in the minority here but I actually liked this sequel better than the original...and the original was very good and extremely popular. Maybe I was biased because I played this with some kids present and was pleasantly surprised to hear almost no profanity, which I couldn't say was the case in the first film. It was a "cleaner" movie, and still an equally entertaining one with a good mix of drama, action, comedy and even some good music thrown in. The film has no lulls and 110 minutes go by pretty quickly. The first half of this movie takes place in New York City, where we last saw "Mick Dundee" (Paul Hogan). The second half, the crocodile man takes his bride (Linda Kozlowski) back to the outback in Australia. Hogan was never more entertaining and, of course, feeling comfortable back in his home territory. This is just a fun ride all the way and, yes, to use a cliché, good family entertainment. In CDII Mike Dundee is still as likable and fun as in the last one but this movie gives the term "slow" a bad name. Aborigines now how magical powers and they seem to have rubbed them off on Crocodile Dundee who now can communicate with them via the wind with (as well as with the animals). He even turns out to be a millionaire real state owner ! Hispanic and Japanese characters talk in English between themselves. Dundee's girlfriend still can't act. The material isn't fresh anymore. Still, a lot of the jokes are funny (specially when the characters get back to Australia) and this movie had enough to make me want to go see the dreaded CDIII many years later, good enough reason for me not being able to forgive it ! The 1988 follow-up to Paul Hogan's international hit "Crocodile" Dundee is less interesting and more formulaic than the first film, while a silly suspense element about a retaliatory drug kingpin has an air of contrivance... |

Man of the Year (Full Screen Edition)ReviewsWISH IT WERE TRUE - WE NEED A GOVERNMENT FOR THE PEOPLE Robin Williams plays a television comedian who talks about politics on his show. He is so popular that over 8,000,000 who watch his show write in and encourage him to run for president. He does and wins. This movie has an all star cast, including Jeff Goldblum and Christoper Walken. What I liked about this movie is that it's relevant to current politics. It points out, in a very funny way, the fact that no matter who is in office, it always seems like business as usual. Nothing ever changes no matter who gets elected. This movie is so incredibly funny. Williams, with his unique way of making any topic funny, really tells it like it is with the political landscape. You get to laugh a lot during this movie. There are so many "you're so right, I know what you mean" moments. If you're sick of politics as usual and need a good laugh, I promise you will enjoy this movie. It really is that good. The Bottom Line: With its comedy largely recycled from Robin Williams' standup gigs and its plot a hideous amalgam of thriller, comedy, and message picture (not to mention advertisement for Saturday Night Live), Man of the Year is one of the last movies anyone should add to their lists. Before purchasing MAN OF THE YEAR from amazon I already had a copy. The reason I made the additional purchase was to give as a gift to my mother,as I found the movie to be very entertaining It has the humor for which Robin Williams is known, with the added satyr towards politics and an outlook of what I agree to be our present state of government.I would recommend this movie to anyone regardless of their political views(it might even open a few eyeballs with its content)I hope others take the time to watch and enjoy the laughter. Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a political comedian. Think Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Christopher Walken plays his manager. One night on his show, someone asks him why he doesn't run for President, and the ball starts rolling. At first, it's just a lark, a publicity stunt, but it becomes more real when he debates the regular candidates. And even more real when he wins. Or is it? Laura Linney plays a woman who works for the company who devised the computer voting system, and she's discovered a glitch. She tells the head of the company (Jeff Goldblum), and receives the equivalent of a "don't worry your pretty little head about it." She thinks the problem's been fixed, but when she sees the election results, she knows it hasn't been. And then the story becomes serious, as the company tries to shut her up using whatever means is necessary, and all those in power are more concerned with perceptions than reality. As long as Tom Dobbs looks like the legally elected President, that's more important than whether or not he actually is. I truly do not think that the movie changed directions--it's more that the viewers' expectations did. Which is, I think, the fault of the marketing department. Given the way the story is set up in the first half, there's no other way it could have played out in the second. The computer company's willingness to overlook the problem and the huge amount of money riding on the program was introduced early on. There's no way you can make that funny, and no way you can resolve it in an amusing way without being unbelievable. And much as the ending pained me, there was no way it could have ended differently, either. The ending message is that maybe the crisis would prompt politicians to act differently in the future, but, call me a cynic, I wouldn't count on it. I think (hope) it made people uncomfortable to think that people in positions of power really can be that ruthless. Hopefully, after they've vented about movies that "aren't really comedies," a little spark will linger in the backs of their heads. My biggest pet peeve: the "problem" with the software. I'm not even going to spoiler it, because it's really, really stupid, and it's not much of a revelation, anyway: the program had a glitch that made it automatically select a name with double letters in it as the winner. It would have been much better to leave the actual glitch vague than to come up with something that idiotic. If you're a programmer, and that seems logical to you, please let me know. I'll feel so much better about it. Average Rating:![]() |

Crosley CR32 CD Cathedral Radio with CD - PaprikaReviewsIt was packaged well, delivered in great time. And the receipient can't stop thanking me it. This radio has proven to be a conversation piece in our dining room, as it does look rather cool and elegant. And when you play older recordings, say some Bing Crosby on Decca or Billie Holiday on Columbia, it does a fine job and seems to match the period it's trying to represent. When you play a newer recording, say the new Michael Buble CD, however, it falls majorly short and flat. This has probably the worst sounding stereo sound I've ever come across on a unit like this. Those who like to listen to newer music should look elsewhere. I am just lucky I like to listen to the older stuff, and for that it works just fine. The radio itself is attractive, works well and is a perfect size and design for my small cottage. However, it is quite difficult to see the control labels. I have to memorize what the various buttons do and then hope I hit the right one. I received this radio and it's just wonderful. The sound is great and I just love the old time style. Well worth the money! The radio reception is great. I do wish it had more then a single CD slot. I love the look of it. Average Rating:![]() |

Kaito Antique Style AM/FM/LW Radio with Tone Control, KA8083ReviewsIf you want a radio that looks cool and "retro" on the shelf, but only works more-or-less, this is the one for you. The volume knob is extremely noisy and imprecise; you can either set the volume too loud or way too loud. The tuner is adequate for our purposes, it picks up a few stations decently. When you consider that many "designer" radios are priced in the hundreds, this isn't such a bad buy really. I don't know if the one I received was defective but, if not, then this is the worst radio I have ever seen. The FM dial would only tune between 102 & 108 mhz. Selectivity was non-existant on AM. I have other great radios from Kaito but this one must have been designed before they could afford an engineer. Don't waste your money. I promptly returned this one. Average Rating:![]() |

80 Years of the Oscar: The Official History of the Academy AwardsReviewsBought this item as used, but it appeared brand new. Paid a fraction of the original price. This is not the first good experience with Amazon and its associate dealers. Has it all. The OSCARS from A to Z. No other book can even come close. Informative and entertaining. Add it to your collection. My husband loves his gift, we both enjoy the content all the knowlwdge of films and their history. Thanks to Robert Osborn and others for getting a great book published. We recieved it in record time We both would recommend this book to films buffs. "80 Years of Oscar..." is a fairly entertaining look at the Academy Awards from the first ceremony in 1927 through 2007. Each year is about a 5 page chapter, starting with a brief essay on the year's highlights and a small shot of the movie poster for the winner of "Best Picture of the Year". Each chapter has a complete listing of all the categories, the nominees and an asterik near the winner and about 7 or 8 photos . The photos are accompanied by a plot summary and sometimes a trivia fact similar to the type Robert Osborne gives when introducing movies on the Turner Classic Movies channel. Though it remains fairly entertaining, when considering the book's price, the author's vast film knowledge and the self-proclamation as "The Official History...", I expected more. The full list of categories and nominees is available on several websites for free, so I was hoping the book would offer more. The trivia is a mixed bag and never controversial. It's usually superficial, such as it was an actresses fifth nomination or a film wasn't expected to be a hit. None gave the feeling that you were getting an insider's view of Hollywood. However, quotes from the actors on how they felt winning the oscar help capture some of the excitement of oscar night. The photos are clearly secondary to the category listings. They are mostly black and white, even for color films and many are crammed into the margins of the text. There does not seem to be any attempt to arrange them in a way that would generate excitement or more than passing interest. Predictably, there are many movies stills and pictures of the actors holding their oscar. There are no full page, color photos. The photos are fully functional, but encylopedic and few make you want to stop and stare and get lost in. So, basically, you're not getting what you paid for. There's nothing really particularly wrong with any of this, but there's nothing particularly extra about it either. Sadly, perhaps the book best captures the Oscar Ceremony by being overlong and pretentious with a few golden nuggets to keep you going to the end. This is the 4th version of the book I have purchased. Osborne updates it every 5 years. I love the book. It is the best encyclopedia of Oscar information available. Average Rating:![]() |

Antiques Roadshow Primer : The Introductory Guide to Antiques and Collectibles from the Most-Watched Series on PBSReviewsThis book had an easy and well organized format. It would be a helpful guide, especially for the beginning collector. An excellent book for the collector, both new or experienced. Newcomers will get most from this book, but there were useful tips even for old hands like myself. Covers major categories of antiques and collectibles in a very readable and informative way. Has useful tips on telling good from bad, old from new and which categories to avoid until you become more experienced. There are better books if you are looking to learn the history of a particular area of collecting, but as a primer to give you an appreciation of antiquing and helping you avoid the sometimes costly and simple (yet common) mistakes it cannot be beaten in my view. If you love the Antiques Road show you will love this book! It's packed with Beautiful full color pictures of the antiques that made the show such a hit, and the stories that go with them. There's even profiles of all the antique dealers that have been in the show since the beginning. Really a fun read, on a very unique show. Frankly, what I love most about the show is when somebody thinks they have something so valuable and it's fake, they are so smug, then shocked, it's priceless to watch them recoil. They should get this book and they might learn how to spot a fake. Honestly, those two weird twins on the show freak me out, they are so bizarre looking, but those two ecentric fops really know american antique furniture and their expertise is honed in this book. But seriously, if you enjoy the roadshow or just want to know more about antiques then I do recommend this book Antiques Roadshow is an enigma. It is at the same time one of the most informative shows on television and one of the most misleading. This book is quite similar. The information presented to help identify styles is very good overall, although there are some serious shortcomings in certain sections. However, this book also includes the ubiquitous "Find" featured on the show which gives the reader an unrealistic expectation of the value of what they may own. Also featured in the book are sections on items which are "out." In many of those sections I found items which sell quite well in our local market as well as online. It seemed that the decision to call something "out" was made solely on price issues. Invariably in this work the items which bring sums over $1000 were mentioned while hot collectibles & antiques that can be had between $50-$500 were either left out or barely touched upon in the text. I use this book as a reference for styles, periods, and such, but I do not trust their market research any more in print than I do on TV. ....and I'm a professional appraiser. Average Rating:![]() |

Collector's Guide to Antique RadiosReviewsWhen I first started searching for tube radios to buy, I knew I needed a price guide. And, I had doubts about this volume after reading some negative reviews. Now, I find it invaluable and can't imagine shopping without it. Any buying guide must be portable to be useful. This book is about as big as a practical buying guide can be. With 317 pages (7th edition) printed on 8.5 x 11 inch paper, you cannot stuff this guide into your shirt pocket. However, you can carry it in your briefcase or a shipping bag. (I assume that future editions will be available in a digital format for use on portable electronic devices.) I had some concerns about omissions. Well, after attending radio swap meets, flea markets, yard sales and making inquiries about Craigslist and eBay postings, my experience is that the omissions are not huge relative to the radios I have seen on the market. Moreover, several times I have found data on similar models that gave me valuable insights into a model not listed. No guide can account for all variables, but I can tell you that this guide can help you to avoid costly mistakes. Many sellers have no clue about market value, and are wildly optimistic about what they think their antique tube radio should sell for. I always define a "bargain" or "too costly to buy" by reference to this guide. The book presents several pages explaining its approach to valuation. After reading the detailed comments, you will be better equipped to make adjustments for unique situations and your buying interests. There are 800 color photographs in the 7th edition. Do I wish there were more? Sure, and typically each guide has more photos than the previous edition. Again, a buying guide must be portable and cannot contain all the data and photographs that we would want in an encyclopedic history of all tube radios ever produced. Given that there are no comparable buying guides published, are there reasons to praise this book? There are indeed. If you are buying, don't leave home without it. There are very few buying situations where a beginner or even an expert would not be helped by referring to this book. This is a superb presentation of otherwise rare data on a niche hobby ... and a stunning bargain at under $25. I have performed several market research projects in my professional life. And, I can only respect the years of research and data accumulation that have gone into the production of this unique work. If either the author or publisher ever stop producing this guide, it would be a huge loss to radio hobbyists. Moreover, this superb guide keeps getting better ... even as the population of collectors is likely diminishing. I have owned previous issues of "Colector's Guide to Antique Radios" and found them very helpful in giving me much needed values of old radios in which I wanted to sell. They have also helped inform me about certain specs. about items that I was interested in purchasing. I am a big fan of old tabletop tube radios and old transistor radios. As a smalltime collector, I very much like the color pictures of some of the radios included in the issues. This issue gave me more of the same much needed info, as well as fascinating photos! Collector's Guide to Antique Radios: Identifcation and Values (Collector's Guide to Antique Radios) This book is a valuable reference for me as I look for bargains in antique radios. I really enjoyed the book and have taken it along on radio hunting trips. It gives you a place to start but there are a surprising number of radios that are not in the book. Still, it has provided me a good basis for valuation and a real education of the universe of antique radios. Thanks. Collectors who enjoy antique radios and specialty libraries catering to specialty collectors will have to have the updated 7th edition to Collector's Guide to Antique Radios by John Slusser: it packs in color photos of each antique to accompany the very latest values, organizes chapters by makers for quick and easy consultation, and includes plenty of reference material perfect for identifying the radios and their values. Ravel: Works for Orchestra (Complete), Vol. 1ReviewsThis VoxBox release contains very fine performances of Ravel's most popular orchestral works, including the longest, most beautifully languorous Bolero one will ever hear! However, the Rhapsodie Espagnole, Alborada del Gracioso, Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, Menuet Antique, and Pavane for a Dead Princess all display a similar sense of both idiom and elegance and are played with expansive fervor by Skrowaczewski and the Minnesotans. The orchestra is captured in very clean and warm analog sound. This 2-CD set is bookended by what I consider to be bonus recordings of the Piano Concerto and String Quartet. Abbey Simon tackles the concerto's intricacies with charm and panache, accompanied sympathetically by the Luxumbourg orchestra, if not with the nth degree of rapture. The Quartet in F Major is played with technical assurance by The New Hungarian Quartet, but is recorded a bit too closely as one hears much obtrusive breathing during the performance. It's unfortunate for the novice and the bargain hunter that these once very economical releases (originally in two 2-CD sets) are no longer available new in their original CD incarnations, but Skrowaczewski's Ravel performances have been re-released in a couple of pricey "original surround sound" releases by Mobile Fidelity: Ravel: Bolero; La Valse; etc. [Hybrid SACD] and Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé Suites; Ma Mère l'Oye; Valses nobles et sentimentales [Hybrid SACD] These recordings along with Volume 2 of Ravel's orchestral music performed by the Minnesota Orchestra under the baton of Stanislaw Skrowaczewski have become a legend in the audiophile world. They are the best recorded performances of Ravel's music I have ever heard and I have many on CD. The ones with the Minnesota Orchestra were recorded by the famous team of Marc Aubort and the late Joanna Nickrenz who were among the first to use Dolby A Noise reduction (called Dolby s/n stretcher), which for the first time achieved a signal to noise ratio of over 80 db on magnetic tape. These recordings were made in the mid to late 1970's for the Vox/Turnabaout label in the new Minnesota Orchestra Hall. This hall is considered by many to be the most acoustically perfect hall in the world. Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz captured the orchestra and ambient hall beautifully. There is great detail yet the hall reverberation is captured to great and beautiful effect which really enhances the performance. Stanislaw Skrowaczewski has a way of superbly shaping Ravel's phrases and his performances have a delicate beauty contrasted with loud flamboyant flourishes that are perfect for Ravel music. The result is truly THRILLING in Bolero and Rhapsodie Espagnole and delicately moving in Pavane and Minuet. Mobile Fidelity thought well enough of these recordings to re-master some of them onto 2 Super Audio CDs in the true original surround sound!!!! I highly recommend them. GORGEOUS!! Ravel: Bolero; La Valse; etc. [Hybrid SACD] Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé Suites; Ma Mère l'Oye; Valses nobles et sentimentales [Hybrid SACD] The recording of the Piano Concerto with the Luxembourg Radio Orchestra is not as good as the Minnesota orchestra recordings but Abbey Simon's performance is absolutely superb and worth hearing.
