Reviews

After reading the reviews, purchased two of these lanterns and couldn't be happier. I have actually had them a number of months now and they look as good as the day I received them. Despite never-ending rain throughout the summer, they have yet to show any signs of wear or erosion. They are extremely attractive and appear to be easy to install. They have worked without an issue since installation and I am extremely grateful I installed them, since the lights on my street appear to have diminished in strength.

Functionally, this light is great. Motion and light activated with a timer plus a dimming function (be sure to use dimmable CFLs if you plan to use a CFL). The only complaint I have is the color. Usually antique bronze is a deep brown almost black color - this is more of a deep red/rust color. Not a big deal to me, it still looks good, just not the color I was expecting.

Used this light to replace an identical unit that was on a home for four years with direct exposure to the sun and rain. Finish after 4 years still very good. The relay inside of the unit for the dim lighting function had failed all other functions worked fine. Since at night there was only one unit functioning on the front of the home it looked bad. So only replaced one. The other is still working fine after 4 years and the new one hopefully will work for another 4 years. It is a nice light for a good price with alot of features often found on lights that typically cost alot more.

I needed 2 lights for both sides of my front entry and bought one first, just to see if it was all it's said to be. I got the second about a week later. I can't say its the sturdiest assembly I've ever seen, but then again how sturdy does a light like this need to be? It works as advertised... I have them lit with 15 watt incandescents, on low they have a nice faint glow, barely enough to light my 30 foot long porch. When the motion sensor is activated, there's a nice amount of light to see your way, or to light up someone approaching. The motion sensor is very sensitive at the high setting, 40 feet +. Both were turned down to about mid-way, and they're now perfect for my installation. I can't comment on long-term service as I've only had these about a month, but if you like the look, and want the function this light has (dual-bright), go for it. I've been satisfied so far.

I bought 2 of these back in december 08 and they have been amazing. Easy install, work great, classy looks. I am 100% satisfied with these lights!

Motion-activated lights are convenient and energy efficient, but they can be a little bulky and awkward to look at-in the driveway is fine, but you wouldn't want to put one on your porch. Unless it's one of Heath Zenith's porch lights, that is...

It's difficult to be specific here because, since these are for replacement of burned out bulbs, I won't really know if they work until they are needed. Even then, I won't have any way to comment on their lifetime design until they have been in service and the filaments burn out one by one.

Amazon has helped me to find hard to locate items. I am truly grateful for their help and plan to use their servu=ice often.

I purchased this bulb several years ago, I don't use the lamp the bulb is in very often, but it works fine. It was a very reasonable price (4.99) but the shipping was over $8 (ouch). Still I would purchase this again because I had trouble finding the bulb locally.

Piano Desk Lamp - Antiqued Bronze Piano Desk Lamp - Antiqued Bronze

The lamp works fine as a piano lamp, looks nice. I wish the lamp shade would rotate further so that the light does not shine in my eyes while I'm playing. Also, the base does not adjust very much. We have a tall upright and I'd like to angle it down further than it does.

This lamp does the trick: it's nice looking and solidly made and casts a pleasant bright light. It is heavily weighted in its base, so it stands firmly on top of the piano and is not wobbly at all. The slightly high shipping cost is probably due to this weight. Two minor nits to pick: it doesn't come with bulbs (it uses two specialty 'T' bulbs that you need to go to a hardware store to find), and its switch is on the cord about 1 foot down from the base of the lamp. This means that you can't put the lamp in the middle of the piano and run the cord behind the piano, because then the switch is unreachable behind the piano. So we run the cord all along the top of the piano and off the edge of it. A switch on the lamp itself would make more sense. Also, I haven't found this type of bulb in a fluorescent - so you have to burn 80 watts in this thing. But overall, recommended.

The Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany The Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany

Reviews

I've never seen a finer book of Tiffany Lamp photographs. The photographer for this book developed a new technique for photographing stained glass and this is a landmark book. There are photo's in this book of some of the rarest of all the Tiffany lamps - many I've never seen before. Buy this book before it goes out of print!

Over the years, there have been many books written on Tiffany's leaded glass lamps. Most were very expensive, they had very biased opinions of the author, and some were down right full of technical errors! I use these books as references to make my reproduction pieces. Without these resources, my job is a lot more difficult. It is so refreshing to find a new book that not only has excellent quality photos, but also presents a fresh review of a very important topic! Overall, I found very few technical miscues and I think this book is the best value on the planet for this niche. It contains several previously unpublished lamp patterns. The photos of actual equipment used at Tiffany Studios is very impressive. The authors did their homework! If you want a great starter book for your library on Tiffany or just need a beautiful book for your coffee table, this book is a winner!

I really enjoyed this book. The color full page pictures are great.

I'd postponed writing a review of this book because I imagined that it was only fair to read the entire text before I wrote about it. I've never really gotten to concentrate on the words, though, because the photos are so, *SO* astonishingly beautiful. This isn't simply a collection of lamp pictures, taken as though they're head-and-shoulders photos in a police lineup. Many of the lamps have multiple views, from very small (to show off how drapery glass was used, for instance), to a general detail shot, to photographs of the bases the company used to accompany the shade. The photography quality is excellent; you really see everything you need. A professional glass artist (or drooling amateur like myself) can see the details and understand why these lamps set the bar for stained glass. Even if you know NOTHING about the subject, you'll be blown away by the overwhelming prettiness of the material. I'm not sure if this book represents every Tiffany lamp ever made, but it must come close. Additional images show related material, such as photos of Tiffany's Long Island home (wow), cartoons for lamps we've never seen, and Tiffany Studios' 1904 advertisements for its lamps. Most of the book, however, is a study of the lamps themselves, organized by topic (such as fauna or wetlands), and analyzed in some detail. When I drag my eyes away, I can recognize that the prose is as complete as the photographs. In addition to the historical context in which the lamps were created, there's plenty of history and analysis about their manufacture. ("Another watercolor rendering in the collection in the Metropolitan Museum is for a Snowball shade [figure 93]. Here, because of the model's domical form, the designer compensated for the curvature of the surface by opening the top sections of the shade into a series of regular projections, just as a cartographer has to allow for the curvature of the globe.") Some of it is a bit dry and academic, at least for those of us who are here primarily to say, "ooh, how pretty!" but if you cared about the details, you would definitely appreciate its depth. In other words: there's plenty to look at, and there's plenty to read, depending on what you're looking for. You can find a few other collections of Tiffany's works, but I can't imagine you'll find a better one.

It is about time that another great book joins the volumes published in the 70's and 80's. There is some new information here as well as photos of lamps that have not been seen for years. This book is well worth the money for any fan of these incredible lamps.

Average Rating:

This is the first book devoted to Tiffany lamps in more than 20 years. Lanterns That Lit Our World: How to Identify, Date and Restore Old Railroad, Marine, Fire, Carriage, Farm and Other Lanterns Lanterns That Lit Our World: How to Identify, Date and Restore Old Railroad, Marine, Fire, Carriage, Farm and Other Lanterns

Reviews

While I am only learning about this subject. It gave me an excellent understanding of what I need to know.

Great book . very informative.. Good section on repair and identifiying.

Along with a brief history of American lanterns, Mr. Hobson offers information on the anatomy of lanterns including how they work, identification of parts, materials, finishes and markings. Seventeen different US manufactures and their lanterns are identified and illustrated with detailed specifications. Excellent advice for collectors in locating, identifying and pricing, as well as, repair, restoration and care of lanterns. From a well respected member of lamp and lantern researchers.

This was the first book I bought on this subject, and I found it invaluable as an introduction to early lantern manufacturers and lighting technology. The author clearly explains the different fuels available at different historical periods, and the technologies that utilized them. Contains many very clear reproductions from early catalogs organized by manufacturers in an easy to read reference format. Using the entries here, it is easy to locate the manufacturer, model, relative date of manufacture, and background on most commonly-encountered lanterns. The rarity guide is somewhat lacking in timeliness and should be updated, however. Despite that, I also recommend this author's Book Two as a useful addition and supplement to this book. Advanced collectors would likely be disappointed, but novices and experienced collectors will find this book interesting and informative.

A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls

Reviews

What a wonderful find this was for our family. There are so few photographs left of someone who gave us so much love. Her brother also worked for Tiffany in the show room.

A New Light on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls I found this book fascinating, as I have been researching the stained glass windows and other memorial gifts in the Nave of Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, Kansas City, Missouri, the Cathedral Church of the Episcopal Diocese of West Missouri. Agnes Fairchild Northrop (1857-1953) was discussed in this book, and there were two photographs of her. I was eager to learn about her because the largest Tiffany window in our Cathedral is based on a window Agnes designed in 1910 for Helen Miller Gould, and I wanted to include as much information about her as I could in the book I'm preparing. But the stories of Clara Driscoll and the other "Tiffany girls" were just so interesting to me, and it was almost like having been there, and being able to see and experience all the events and activities behind the man and his art glass company which has certainly attained mythic heights in American culture. The research was detailed and impeccable. And the price was so reasonable! If you're reading this, you're already at your computer, so what are you waiting for? Buy it, already!

Looking into how the highly-valued Tiffany lamps and other fine objects came to be, the three authors disclose the critical, unique part Clara Driscoll had in this. Driscoll served as a major creative force for many Tiffany lamps by her own artistic sense and as director of a staff of other talented women. Recently found correspondence of Driscoll's--an Ohio native who lived from 1861 to 1944--verifies that she was mostly responsible for the classic Tiffany designs of the Wisteria, Dragonfly, and Peony. The authors do not aim to devalue Louis Comfort Tiffany's (1848-1933) role and reputation in giving Driscoll her due. They seek mainly to lay out a broader, more informed understanding of the creation of the timeless Tiffany works. Parts of the book go beyond Driscoll's place in the company to see her as representative of sprightly, adventuresome, and bright young American woman coming into the American workforce and into large cities in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Besides Driscoll, there were a number of other similarly-talented and -natured women who contributed to the inimitable design and outstanding status of the Tiffany lamps and other objects. Collectively known as the "Tiffany Girls," many are pictured in available period photographs; and all known are given biographical notes.

Presents celebrated works of Tiffany Studios in an entirely new context, focusing on the women who labored behind the scenes to create the masterpieces now inextricably linked to the Tiffany name.
