River City Clocks Radio-controlled Schoolhouse Clock with Swinging Pendulum and Cherry Finish - 21 Inches Tall - Model # 801-403CReviewsJust got the clock today, put in the batteries, selected Pacific Time and the clock immediately began to set itself. It stopped at 4 p.m. as the instructions said it might. It was 5:20 at the time. About five miutes later it started setting itself again and stopped at the correct time. I checked it against another atomic clock and it is about 15 seconds fast. Not sure which clock is the more accurate one. It is hanging on a fireplace mantle at a 90 degree angle to, and about 12-15 feet from a large north facing window. I was concerned about it receiving the atomic signal but it picked it up just fine. The image used by Amazon shows a second hand and even though the instructions mention a second hand, mine does not have one. The dial face is also not white, but rather an antiqued cream color. Reduces the contrast with the numerals a bit. It no longer says La Crosse, but River City. Would have liked the white. However the wood color is right on. Nice cherry finish. The pendulum which is powered by a separate battery swings too fast to be realistic. It has a bit of adjustment to raise/lower the pendulum which may be able to slow it down a bit. Check the space available where you want to hang this thing as it is a large clock. Small discrepancies aside I think this clock will work out just fine. Looks good on the mantel and it will be nice to have something that will be accurate when a power failure leaves all the digitals flashing. I purposely waited a couple of months since my purchase to ensure the clock performed as expected. It does! We added a breakfast room to our kitchen and decided we needed a clook on one of our new walls. I liked the idea of a radio controlled clock to keep accurate time and to adjust for the changes for day light savings. The clock was delivered in a few days, was in excellent condition. Assembly was a snap and it has performed flawless even since. I would recommend this clock to family and friends. This is a beautiful clock with a bright, easy to see face. The automatic, radio control feature is really special. All we had to do was insert batteries and set the time zone. I highly recommend this clock. INSERT AA BATTERY, ELECT TIME ZONE AND IT SETS ITSELF....ONLY NOTHING HAPPENED. PLAYED WITH IT FOR A WEEK, CAUGHT THE TIME SIGNAL FOR A FEW DAYS THEN WENT BALLISTIC THEN JUST STOPPED.... NICE PRESENT FOR MY WIFE'S 50TH BIRTHDAY. AMAZON HAS NEVER DONE THIS TO ME BEFORE...THINK I'LL STICK TO BUYING GOOD OLD FASHION BOOKS. I am 100% satisfied. The clock looks great hanging on my wall. I was informed that my purchase would be delivered on a certain date and I received it several days before it was due. I would recommend this product to anyone--friend or foe. Average Rating:![]() |

Cathedral Antique-Style CD Player in Paprika by Crosley RadioReviewsMy husband is an audiophile, and laughed at me when I said I wanted this CD/radio. Unlike him, I don't really care that much about sound quality. Not that it doesn't matter to me at all--it's just that HE has the big, nice sound system already, so I was happy to get something that would look nice in the living room and could play in the background while I was reading. I don't need or even like to play music very loud, so something small and pleasantly retro like this was just what I wanted.(We don't all care for 15 shelves worth of audio equipment and a gigantic subwoofer.) I was so excited! As other reviewers have stated, it's a little difficult to tune in the radio. That was disappointing, but my CDs sounded nice enough, and the radio/CD player made me happy even to look at. It just seemed RIGHT to listed to Louis Armstrong through it, as if the beauty of the retro cathedral style cabinet made the sound more authentic. It was lovely! I was even considering getting another Crosley product for a different room, having fun paging through the catalog and anticipating what I would ask for for my birthday. I was SO happy. ... for about 7 months. Then the right speaker blew. (Sound doesn't come out of the front speaker-looking area, but is stereo from the sides.) That it would blow surprised me, seeing as how I never, never listen to it at top volume, nowhere near. The guarantee that comes with this item is limited, and wouldn't cover the problem. Reasonable person that I am, I still wasn't too upset--I was just disappointed a bit. After all, my husband is an audiophile, as I mentioned, and he could replace the speakers for me if we could get replacements. With that happy thought, he wrote Crosley to find out if they sold replacement speakers, or if they had recommendations for replacements. He never heard back. He wrote twice, responsibly checked his spam folder just in case, but NOTHING. So... I wrote. This is the third time they had been contacted by us. Keep in mind we were both polite: simply explained what had happened, and asked if there were recommended speakers so we could take care of the problem ourselves. I don't care about sound quality that much as I said, but it is unlistenable with all the static in the blown speaker. Was the third time the charm? No. I got no response, either. Even if Crosley had no recommendations, it seems to me it would be polite to write back. Is this an indication of the quality of their customer service, or the quality of their product... or both? That is, after having looked for speakers ourselves, we don't seem to be able to locate any that will fit. We can find the correct wattage and so forth; however, there is not much clearance inside the case. Every speaker we looked at--and we have spent considerable time looking--seemed to be too deep to fit. So far as we can tell, the speakers are a proprietary make and substitutions that will fit can't be found elsewhere. I loved this item while it worked. However, unless you are the type of person that can pay $80 or $100 every few months to get a new one ($80 if you get it on sale), don't buy this product. The quality is apparently so poor, the manufacturer, Crosley, is embarrassed to respond even to polite inquiry. I was their perfect target customer--someone who didn't care so much about perfect sound, but who preferred instead the vintage look with just acceptable sound quality--and I am terribly unhappy with them. I'm so unhappy, I'm wasting a lovely Saturday morning writing this review. Shame on them. I certainly won't be buying another Crosley product for a different room as I had once fondly planned, and I hope I have saved you the trouble and expense of buying ANY Crosley product. For shame. I love this "Cathedral"-style Crosley AM/FM Radio/CD Player. The paprika color is so rich and warm, beautifully finished, and complements just about any other shade of wood finish. My style is eclectic, but leans to the Victorian and oriental with medium and dark cherry, mahogany, black lacquer, and jewel-tone fabrics, so the finish and style of this Crosley piece fit right in. The sound is great -- maybe not like a $3,000 sound system, but it does justice to my classical radio station and CDs. The antique-style, bronze-colored hardware is gorgeous and really completes the look. Everyone who sees it wants to know where I found it, especially when I tell them how reasonably priced it is (they all should know by now that I find my "deals" on Amazon). It arrived ahead of schedule and in excellent condition (good packing), and I highly recommend this product and vendor. Average Rating:![]() |

Man of the Year (Full Screen Edition)ReviewsWISH IT WERE TRUE - WE NEED A GOVERNMENT FOR THE PEOPLE Robin Williams plays a television comedian who talks about politics on his show. He is so popular that over 8,000,000 who watch his show write in and encourage him to run for president. He does and wins. This movie has an all star cast, including Jeff Goldblum and Christoper Walken. What I liked about this movie is that it's relevant to current politics. It points out, in a very funny way, the fact that no matter who is in office, it always seems like business as usual. Nothing ever changes no matter who gets elected. This movie is so incredibly funny. Williams, with his unique way of making any topic funny, really tells it like it is with the political landscape. You get to laugh a lot during this movie. There are so many "you're so right, I know what you mean" moments. If you're sick of politics as usual and need a good laugh, I promise you will enjoy this movie. It really is that good. The Bottom Line: With its comedy largely recycled from Robin Williams' standup gigs and its plot a hideous amalgam of thriller, comedy, and message picture (not to mention advertisement for Saturday Night Live), Man of the Year is one of the last movies anyone should add to their lists. Before purchasing MAN OF THE YEAR from amazon I already had a copy. The reason I made the additional purchase was to give as a gift to my mother,as I found the movie to be very entertaining It has the humor for which Robin Williams is known, with the added satyr towards politics and an outlook of what I agree to be our present state of government.I would recommend this movie to anyone regardless of their political views(it might even open a few eyeballs with its content)I hope others take the time to watch and enjoy the laughter. Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a political comedian. Think Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Christopher Walken plays his manager. One night on his show, someone asks him why he doesn't run for President, and the ball starts rolling. At first, it's just a lark, a publicity stunt, but it becomes more real when he debates the regular candidates. And even more real when he wins. Or is it? Laura Linney plays a woman who works for the company who devised the computer voting system, and she's discovered a glitch. She tells the head of the company (Jeff Goldblum), and receives the equivalent of a "don't worry your pretty little head about it." She thinks the problem's been fixed, but when she sees the election results, she knows it hasn't been. And then the story becomes serious, as the company tries to shut her up using whatever means is necessary, and all those in power are more concerned with perceptions than reality. As long as Tom Dobbs looks like the legally elected President, that's more important than whether or not he actually is. I truly do not think that the movie changed directions--it's more that the viewers' expectations did. Which is, I think, the fault of the marketing department. Given the way the story is set up in the first half, there's no other way it could have played out in the second. The computer company's willingness to overlook the problem and the huge amount of money riding on the program was introduced early on. There's no way you can make that funny, and no way you can resolve it in an amusing way without being unbelievable. And much as the ending pained me, there was no way it could have ended differently, either. The ending message is that maybe the crisis would prompt politicians to act differently in the future, but, call me a cynic, I wouldn't count on it. I think (hope) it made people uncomfortable to think that people in positions of power really can be that ruthless. Hopefully, after they've vented about movies that "aren't really comedies," a little spark will linger in the backs of their heads. My biggest pet peeve: the "problem" with the software. I'm not even going to spoiler it, because it's really, really stupid, and it's not much of a revelation, anyway: the program had a glitch that made it automatically select a name with double letters in it as the winner. It would have been much better to leave the actual glitch vague than to come up with something that idiotic. If you're a programmer, and that seems logical to you, please let me know. I'll feel so much better about it. Average Rating:![]() |

Ravel: Works for Orchestra (Complete), Vol. 1ReviewsThis VoxBox release contains very fine performances of Ravel's most popular orchestral works, including the longest, most beautifully languorous Bolero one will ever hear! However, the Rhapsodie Espagnole, Alborada del Gracioso, Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, Menuet Antique, and Pavane for a Dead Princess all display a similar sense of both idiom and elegance and are played with expansive fervor by Skrowaczewski and the Minnesotans. The orchestra is captured in very clean and warm analog sound. This 2-CD set is bookended by what I consider to be bonus recordings of the Piano Concerto and String Quartet. Abbey Simon tackles the concerto's intricacies with charm and panache, accompanied sympathetically by the Luxumbourg orchestra, if not with the nth degree of rapture. The Quartet in F Major is played with technical assurance by The New Hungarian Quartet, but is recorded a bit too closely as one hears much obtrusive breathing during the performance. It's unfortunate for the novice and the bargain hunter that these once very economical releases (originally in two 2-CD sets) are no longer available new in their original CD incarnations, but Skrowaczewski's Ravel performances have been re-released in a couple of pricey "original surround sound" releases by Mobile Fidelity: Ravel: Bolero; La Valse; etc. [Hybrid SACD] and Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé Suites; Ma Mère l'Oye; Valses nobles et sentimentales [Hybrid SACD] These recordings along with Volume 2 of Ravel's orchestral music performed by the Minnesota Orchestra under the baton of Stanislaw Skrowaczewski have become a legend in the audiophile world. They are the best recorded performances of Ravel's music I have ever heard and I have many on CD. The ones with the Minnesota Orchestra were recorded by the famous team of Marc Aubort and the late Joanna Nickrenz who were among the first to use Dolby A Noise reduction (called Dolby s/n stretcher), which for the first time achieved a signal to noise ratio of over 80 db on magnetic tape. These recordings were made in the mid to late 1970's for the Vox/Turnabaout label in the new Minnesota Orchestra Hall. This hall is considered by many to be the most acoustically perfect hall in the world. Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz captured the orchestra and ambient hall beautifully. There is great detail yet the hall reverberation is captured to great and beautiful effect which really enhances the performance. Stanislaw Skrowaczewski has a way of superbly shaping Ravel's phrases and his performances have a delicate beauty contrasted with loud flamboyant flourishes that are perfect for Ravel music. The result is truly THRILLING in Bolero and Rhapsodie Espagnole and delicately moving in Pavane and Minuet. Mobile Fidelity thought well enough of these recordings to re-master some of them onto 2 Super Audio CDs in the true original surround sound!!!! I highly recommend them. GORGEOUS!! Ravel: Bolero; La Valse; etc. [Hybrid SACD] Ravel: Daphnis et Chloé Suites; Ma Mère l'Oye; Valses nobles et sentimentales [Hybrid SACD] The recording of the Piano Concerto with the Luxembourg Radio Orchestra is not as good as the Minnesota orchestra recordings but Abbey Simon's performance is absolutely superb and worth hearing. Crosley CR32 CD Cathedral Radio with CD - PaprikaReviewsIt was packaged well, delivered in great time. And the receipient can't stop thanking me it. This radio has proven to be a conversation piece in our dining room, as it does look rather cool and elegant. And when you play older recordings, say some Bing Crosby on Decca or Billie Holiday on Columbia, it does a fine job and seems to match the period it's trying to represent. When you play a newer recording, say the new Michael Buble CD, however, it falls majorly short and flat. This has probably the worst sounding stereo sound I've ever come across on a unit like this. Those who like to listen to newer music should look elsewhere. I am just lucky I like to listen to the older stuff, and for that it works just fine. The radio itself is attractive, works well and is a perfect size and design for my small cottage. However, it is quite difficult to see the control labels. I have to memorize what the various buttons do and then hope I hit the right one. I received this radio and it's just wonderful. The sound is great and I just love the old time style. Well worth the money! The radio reception is great. I do wish it had more then a single CD slot. I love the look of it. Average Rating:![]() |

Kaito Antique Style AM/FM/LW Radio with Tone Control, KA8083ReviewsIf you want a radio that looks cool and "retro" on the shelf, but only works more-or-less, this is the one for you. The volume knob is extremely noisy and imprecise; you can either set the volume too loud or way too loud. The tuner is adequate for our purposes, it picks up a few stations decently. When you consider that many "designer" radios are priced in the hundreds, this isn't such a bad buy really. I don't know if the one I received was defective but, if not, then this is the worst radio I have ever seen. The FM dial would only tune between 102 & 108 mhz. Selectivity was non-existant on AM. I have other great radios from Kaito but this one must have been designed before they could afford an engineer. Don't waste your money. I promptly returned this one. Average Rating:![]() |

Morning Industry Radio Frequency Remote Door KnobReviewsThis is an excellent product. I installed it near the end of December. It works flawlessly. my wife is disabled. She operates the lock by remote from 15 feet away out of line of site. The lock came with 2 remote controls. Installation was easy and this is a well built lock. We really do love this new remote door knob, and locking system. It took a little convincing before ordering for my husband, but now that it is installed he loves it too. Our existing door knob was about 20 years old. It was kind of loose, and the key would stick in the lock. I thought since we were replacing it, why not do something cool with a remote, since we love the remote for our cars. To be honest, the directions were not great, but if you just look at the previous lock mechanism carefully you will figure it out pretty quick. We did the entire take off of old, and reinstall of new in about 1/2 hour. That is amazing for us. It usually takes us much longer for the do it yourself stuff that should be "easy". It works great, just like advertised. It does come with keys as well if you ever should need them. We love using the remote. I will say it seems to lock quicker, than it unlocks. It seems as though you have to be pretty close, and point directly to unlock. The locking seems much quicker. Our overall view of it is GREAT. We have said since installing over & over how much we like it. It is also attractive, and no drilling of holes was needed for replacing which we really were happy about. We did not want to damage the door. If you should try it, I think you will be very pleased. Catsrule, Ruckersville VA I bought this product so I would not have to go downstairs to open a door for guests to come by. It works great. I love the remote and the distance I can press the button and the door unlocks. Love it! the knob feels very very solid, like the ones in hospitals or governments buildings. The ones you buy in a hardware store or home depot feel finicky and cheap compared to this (unless you get a name brand like weiser or kwikset) Also since it's RF and not IR (Infrared) there is no line of site required and works a good distance away (at least 50ft)I'm very satisfied. I actually owned 2 of the infrared version of this deadbolt lock and I owned it for more than 4 years now. The quality of the product is good and very easy to use, but the customer service is just wonderful! Last night I had a problem with one of my lock after 4 years of daily use, so I contacted Morning Industry to see if their 25 years warranty is any good. Long story short, I talked to Mathew and went down to their office. Within 10 minutes, I was out with a brand new back section of the lock and I did not even have to show my receipt to them. Morning Industry Radio Frequency Remote DeadboltReviewsThe lock looks & works great. However one remote has failed after 2 months. I fear the other may as well. Good lock, weak remote. If it had a better remote & I would give 5 stars... The picture does not show that there is a hugh box on the back of the door which in my case makes this product worthless. Overall this product is working well for me. Installation is fairly easy (easier if you've put in a door lock before). However, the directions included in the box I received leave a lot to be desired. The clear (C) and set (S) buttons were mislabled on the direction sheet. Go by what's printed on the unit itself. Also, fyi, the small switch lets you toggle the open/closed directions of the lock depending on how your door is hung. Very good item. I had a minor installation problem, called the company and they gave clear instructions and were very curtious. The lock itself is well made and very convenient. I would recommend this remote deadbolt to everyone. I Always use the remote and haven't used the key since I've had this! I received my remote control deadbolt and had it installed and working within an hour. Just follow the directions to the letter and you should have no problem...the instructions are a little sparse but the illustrations are good. Now for the remotes...if they were a little better I would have given 5 stars. They are very cheaply made...now don't get me wrong...they work...just you may have to push the button 2 or 3 times...mostly twice for me. Since I haven't had them too long I can't say how long they will last...but it wouldn't surprise me if they lasted only six months. They are however cheap to replace. Anyway lock performs great...remote has a decent range (30 - 40 feet) just hope the remote lasts longer than it looks. Average Rating:![]() |
